There are several Ice Peaks in Indonesia. They are located at Jayawijaya mountain range, especially at Puncak Jaya, Puncak Soemantri and East Carstensz. The summits areas are covered with ice. At the altitude above 4.600 meters, the temperature at these areas is below 0° C.
That’s how these peaks covered by ice even located near the Equator. But, the volumes are keep decreasing annually. In late 1800s, the glacier had reported has a 20 square kilometers size. But in early 2000 it was only 2 square kilometers left. It means 90% decreased in about 100 years. So sad...
No report how is the size nowadays. But some said it will be disappeared in 20 years more or less.
When you climb the Carstensz Pyramid, this scenery will be your background on the north side. These three peaks located less than 3 kilometers away from Carstensz Pyramid.
