MT. SEMERU 3.676 M

OVERVIEW

Mt. Semeru is a massive volcano which towered the island of Java. A climb to the top, must be one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have in Indonesia. At 3,676 meters, Semeru Peak is the highest point in Java. This mountain is also one of the most popular mountain in Indonesia. A climb to the top may not be easy but it’s definitely worth it.

There is a lake that we will pass on the track, Ranu (small lake) Kumbolo. It’s as popular as the Semeru itself. Many people go trekking to Semeru only to visit this lake, camping on its side to enjoy the ambience and view.

Mt. Semeru is very important for local people. There was a legend among the Java Hindus people that said Semeru was the Meru Mountain from India, moved by God to establish Java Island. They also believe that this mountain is the abode of Shiva in Java.

Semeru lies within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The vegetation is quite complete, consisting montana, sub montana, and alpine. We can find a lot of animals in this mountain, such as: Panther (Panthera pardus melas), Lutung budeng (Trachypithecus auratus), Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), Deer (Muntiacus), Mouse Deer (Tragulus) and some Grouse (Dendrocygna Javanica).

But, since Mt. Semeru is still active, the National Park only gives a permission to trek to Kalimati (last camp), not to the summit. However, for those who insist to trek to the top, the National Park leaves it at their own risk.

These risks includes a poisonous gas bursts, or falling rocks that fall from the unstable peak ridge.

If you want to climb to the top then this is a risk you need to know. Otherwise you could just trek to Kalimati.
