Noken is a name of multifunctional knotted bag which used by Papua native. Traditionally it's made from wood skin. But nowadays, most of it made from nylon. When you climb Carstensz Pyramid by trekking, you will see how local porters in Papua use this colorful bag to carry the load. Even if you give them a backpack, usually they will put it inside a Noken.
Noken is traditionally used to carry not only various goods, but also to carry children. How they use noken: they just wrap it around their head. To prevent the pain cause by the heavy load, they use a cloth to cover their head.
In 2012, Noken was listed in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists as a cultural heritage of Indonesia.
