Climbing a fix ropes to Carstensz summit

How is to climb to Carstensz summit? How long it takes? Does it hard? How difficult? How many people ideally in the same time?

These kind of questions are often we got all the times. Well, let we describes the details.


To reach to Carstensz summit from it base camp (Yellow Valley) will takes about 14 hours round way. It's 8 hours climb up and 6 hours climb down. Some people climb it faster or longer depends on their skills, physical conditions and the group size. The smaller the group, they will climb faster.


Like a summit day on every mountain, on Carstensz it also hard. But again, it's depend on yours and weather condition. We have experience in vary clients and weather conditions. Some is ideal in both, some even not both. In worse weather condition, you will face the cold temperature, heavy rain, ice and snow at the same day. That's why you need to bring a rain suit to climb there. In Carstensz you could face a freezing temperature and get wet at the same time.


We can't do anything about the weather. But base on our experience, what makes the climbing day become very slow is that the client don't really now how to climb the ropes. That is why we chose to give a climbing simulation on the Carstensz wall in the acclimatization day. This will help us climbing faster on the summit day.


On summit day, we need to start early morning around 4 AM or even earlier if it necessary. The goal is to reach the summit before 12 AM. Usually the weather is getting bad around mid day.


On the wall we will climb using a fix ropes. It's not very difficult as long as we know how to use a climbing devices and a basic rock climbing. If you not, don't worry our guide will teach you before the summit day.


In some parts are quite danger with the gravel and rock that not stable, so you need to step carefully to prevent rock fall to person below you. And it's safer to get close together with the team mate in these parts. Our guide will give you a detail brief day before and a clear direction while you climb.


You need to know that is only two lines ropes available, even only one in some parts. So the maximum climbers ideally in the same day is 15. With this number we still can manage a safe climb and fast enough. If to many people climbing in the same day the danger of rock falls increases and there's some fatal accident happened.


To climb down you need to use a rappel device. The ideal one is the figure of eight. Why? in some part, the installed ropes diameter are 12 mm. It will be hard if you use another rappel device.
